Crazy night out

I had waited, waited, and waited for Halloween Parade so badly. The weather on that day, however, did not stand by me. It was RAINING!!!!!
The Halloween Parade in West Village was planned to start at 6 pm but was postponed for an hour due to the weather. I managed to complete my own costume by 7 pm and took pictures with my coworkers to celebrate a happy Halloween. (I work at the computer lab on campus)
IMG_0282My costume is a female Korean historical entertainer from 16 century, Hwang Jin Yi. Korean fashion designer, Younghee Lee, actually inspired me and I adopted most of the design from her. It was a shame that I couldn’t finish a gorgeous hat for my hair and traditional type of handbag. But I could comfort myself being proud of the fact that I made the dress by myself. In the middle, my supervisor Patrick is being a western cowboy, and my Japanese friend Mariko is acting as Marie, a cat character from Disney animation, The Aristocats.
So I hurried up to get dressed and put on my makeup. IMG_0289Tada~ what do you think?
IMG_0293IMG_0295I directly headed to the party instead of watching the parade in the rain. I saw a number of people who were taking a train to move from west to east side.
IMG_0320
IMG_0297The majority of people who are over 21 years old usually celebrate Halloween at a bar or a club or a private house party after the parade. I RSVP’d to one wine bar near Spring Street at which the parade ended.
IMG_0310IMG_0309
IMG_0331IMG_0305IMG_0303I asked these two ladies to pose for me. Yeah, she is ready to dive in!
SAM_0118She represented Amelia, who is an American aviation pioneer. Recently the movie Amelia was released.
IMG_0316He was dressed up as a dwarf from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But it was funny that big figured person was acting like a tiny dwarf.
SAM_0120I guess this guy was promoting the website or was dressed up as an elementary particle in physics.
IMG_0324While I was running to another bar, I saw little angels in the doorway. I could not pass without capturing the moment.
IMG_0326_1I “met” one of my favorite designers, Karl Lagerfeld.
SAM_0106IMG_0333He is my friend, Wil, dressed up as Alex from A Clockwork Orange. He put on mascara on his right eye to exaggerate the character’s uneven eyes. I loved the detail and I laughed at his so-so British accent.
Even though the main purpose of Halloween is diluted, the holiday gives people the opportunity to express themselves and enjoy the escape from the daily life. Plus, you can enjoy sweetness of the “trick or treat.”

Invitation to my world!

Hi, everyone. My name is Ara. I’m living in New York City, studying Fashion Merchandising Management. I’ll go by MINY, which is an acronym of my brand name, May in New York. Samsungimaging sponsors my camera ST500(TL220) so that I can experiment new features such as dual screen, beauty shot, and things like that. Now I would love to invite my readers to my life! :))

I had several ideas for the very first post. As you know, “first” means a lot. However, I decided not to go crazy about quality of pictures, or significant impact of the text. I’ll just share a bit of my life and my interests little by little at a time. So, I’m going to rely on my funny friends this time.

Alex, me, and Robin

I went to my friend, Robin’s house party. She invited those who attended International Fashion Merchandising Management Program in Florence, Italy. We all had a great time during last semester, taking same classes, or traveling together in Europe. It brought us to be bonded among others closely due to the fact that we spent so much time together. HaHa

I asked my friends to make funny and silly faces. And there we go!!! They are Chloe, Casey, Alex, Mya, and Abby. They are smart, talented, creative and FUNNY!!!!! They are photogenic and are willing to mess up their faces or actions for lively and exuberant shots. I love them so much.

It was my first trial to actually use the camera. I haven’t read the manual from the CD because I thought I could handle it without problems. But I should’ve done it before I showed off my fancy little baby. But I like these types of blurry shots not using flash. It gives more natural colors and coincidental moments.

I adjusted photo’s hue to cover the imperfection of the shot and to make the mood unusual.

He is Daniel, Catherine’s boyfriend, who is a photographer. He was the only one who noticed the most important feature of the camera, Self-Portrait. You can see yourself on the front screen, while taking pictures of yourself.

So I followed him to take my self-portrait while I was eating Entenmann’s marshmallow chocolate cake.

I had so much fun at this party. Thank you to my friends who allowed me to post these pictures. I will cover the topics related to fashion, art, and cultural events in New York later on. Then, guys, see you on the next post! :)

A peep into the real Shanghaia

Saying hello from Shanghai again~ :))

Today, I’m going to introduce Jin Mao Tower Hyatt Hotel, which is known as the tallest hotel in the world. Jin Tao Tower has 88 floors and the hotel is located from the 53rd floor to the 87th floor. The exterior alone is jaw dropping. Jin Mao Tower_02

A line of taxi waiting for people coming out of the hotel. More than 90% of the taxi drivers waiting here can carry simple English conversation.

The foreign company buildings you see behind are shining with colorful lightings as if competing with Jin Mao tower for attention.

The entrance of Jin Mao Tower with an impressive exotic appearance. The blue color particularly stands out in this picture. If you apply the cool function that the camera offers to the picture, then you can increase the blue tone without the help from PhotoshopJin Mao Tower_04.

The night view of Shanghai seen from the sky lounge windows of Jin Mao tower.

The tower is so high that when the weather is cloudy you can actually see the clouds float around outside the window and you feel like standing on the sky~!!!

The Jin Mao Tower appears to be taller in the picture because it’s at the front, but actually the World Financial Center you see behind is the highest building in Shanghai, rising higher than Oriental Pearl Tower and Jin Mao Tower.Jin Mao Tower_07

[Samsung WB500(HZ10W) 1/3sㅣf/3.9ㅣISO 80ㅣ6.3mm l manual mode]

The loud mechanical noise of repair work coming out of the construction site preparing for the Shanghai Expo next year was no exception around the Jin Mao Tower.

“ Oriental Pearl Tower “Jin Mao Tower_08

15 minutes walk from the Jin Mao Tower.

It is no exaggeration to say that the Oriental Pearl Tower is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Shanghai. They call it the Pearl Tower, referring to the sphere that composes the architecture. Maybe Shanghai people’s pride bursts out from the Tower rising tall in the middle of Shanghai? Most of the tourists think that this tower is only used for sky lounge but it’s also used as a receiving tower for broadcasting.

I felt a bit dizzy to see it in real but I could tell why this symbolizes Shanghai after feeling its dignity. Before finish my post, I want to share this landmark on the map, especially for you guys~ <3<3<3<3<3<3<3

How to get cool pictures in hot summmer

Posted by Caem on Jul 19, 2009 • (0)

SDC10032

July. The so called ‘Holiday season’! Where do you want to go for vacation? When you return from vacation to your ordinary life, the flood of fatigue and work wait us. It is only time that can console us. Well, at least for Ca’em. Hehe. Vacation season! You will probably clicking away madly with your camera under the burning sun, but you always get disappointed if the results are not that satisfactory.

In fact, the scorching sunlight is not a welcomed guest for photo shooting. Then, what about a gray sky in a rainy day? Not a welcomed guest neither for vacation nor for outdoor shooting. This week, Ca’em plans to share tips on how to effectively take photos in extreme conditions. Let’s take a shot at clear and crisp photos that you can successfully take even when you don’t have an expensive DSLR. Pictures so cool that appear ready to freeze your eyes regardless of the camera. Let’s take a look at example pictures and a few tips on how to take clear pictures.

If you want clear pictures, you first need a clear and bright sky. Even with divine skills and perfect knowledge, if you are not lucky with the weather, you cannot get a nice picture. A blue sky is a good example of a clear landscape that you can easily find around you. The earth is hot due to the hot summer sun but the blue sky is ever bluer. In terms of the season, the sky is bluer in the dry autumn and winter, when the air carries less impurity compared to spring and summer. However, it is still boring to capture the blue sky alone. You have to have at least a good few white pieces of cloud to make it more interesting. A summer sky cleared up after the rain is indeed a gift from nature. WB500_02

I have tatken those pictures when I’ve been Tokyo. See?? You must know that the important of weather.

Secondly, it is important to make it a habit to check the weather when you plan to take pictures. You can easily go online to check weather information real-time. You can obtain basic information such as the time of sun rise, sunset, as well as visibility and ceiling. You can check the ceiling info on Yahoo weather or The weather networks. weathertracker

Lastly, set exposure to under and use saturation for more vivid blue color. Set the exposure 1 or 2 levels lower than the appropriate exposure. In other words, setting the mode a little darker as if lacking some exposure, produces good output. In general, objects are expressed darker when the exposure is a little insufficient. Considering that overexposure obscures the original color and whitens the picture, it is not difficult to understand that under exposure adds depth to the color.

As an exercise, Ca’em set the image size to 7M(3648*2056) and tried saturation and contrast to avoid overexposure from the strong sun reflection and to highlight the achromatic color object. The image size made the photo appear much fuller, quite different from what you get from full image size. Something like a full picture, closer to the object or capturing only the gist of a remote landscape. Sometimes, slimming down the photo is a good way to produce good outcome.SDC16880

WB500(HZ10W) F7.5 l 1/125s l ISO200 l 0.00EV l saturation High

WB500, which supports 10.2 mega pixels, is a good choice to express the inherent colors of objects. However, quality pictures require some busy ass moving. Depending on the weather, the camera should be set up accordingly. Because WB500 supports wide angle lens, it has a dark lens. To complement this, adjust the saturation value under “effect” depending on the object. Set the exposure value to 0.0 under Program AE and adjust saturation value to High/Medium/Normal at effect. The outcome has been quite effective in conveying the original color of the object. Hmmmm.. is it because the object is yellow and green? The color constract is breathtaking. :)SDC17006

WB500(HZ10W) F3.3 l 1/90s l ISO200 l 0.00EV l 4.3mm l saturation High

!!! One watch-out before going further! Serious underexposure risks making the object appear dark. Set the exposure to ‘under’ depending on the feel you want to get across or the surrounding environment, but still within the range of appropriate exposure. Meanwhile, you can also play around with the “auto bracketing”, which takes photos under the three settings of underexposure, appropriate and overexposure, and HDR (#Post13) that combines these three photos, so don’t be hesitant to try various exposures! However, I recommend using a tripod for AEB because it takes long time to store and hand shake is likely to occur…!!!

The pictures below are all shots using underexposure and saturation high. The wart dancing elegantly on the flower petal, a ship floating on a calm river.. These are all scenes you cannot see in the city. Vacation - a sweet escape from the busy reality. If you have yet to decide your vacation destination, a place with open skies would be nice. I truly recommend it to people looking for beautiful landscape and vivid pleasant memories in this hot hot summer. Before you depart, though, check your batteries and don’t forget to bring drinking water and a towel to block the sun! That’s it for today.

Buy me a Spaceship and Fly

The subject of today’s class was tarte. To make a delicious pie crust, our teacher put in the same portion of cake flour and butter so I had a really tough time fitting the pie crust into the tarte mold.

The crust was so loose that I had to sprinkle huge amount of flour to prevent it from sticking to the board, and eventually the tarte ended up becoming hard. I wouldn’t have gone through so much trouble if I had added enough flour in the first place!

This chocolate tarte is the finished product after all that fuss. It’s sprinkled heavily with cocoa powder so when you bite into it, the cocoa powder gets all on your teeth but it was so sweet and delicious.
