Jonathan Takiff: Season's gadgets

BABE MAGNET: We're hearing buzz about digital cameras going "bye-bye" (the newly discontinued Flip camcorder line being a sore case in point) because people are content taking digital stills and video with . Yet a dedicated digi-camera with the right features set still deserves attention.

Take, please, the Samsung DualView ultracompact series, boasting a second LCD screen on the front that displays whatever is being captured by the lens. In effect, that second screen serves as a mirror for the subject - great for attracting a baby's attention. A front screen's also good for getting a glum teen or grown-up to perk up, after noting, "Eew, I look awful!" Or to help the shooter get properly framed in an arms-length self-portrait.

The latest Samsung ST700 Dual View ($199 after savings at Best Buy) also boasts a super-high-resolution 16 megapixel image-capturing chip, five-power optical zoom (far better than the digital zooms in phones), image stabilization, special effects and intuitive touch-screen control.

THE "NO-BRAINER" BACKUP: For all those who do use an iPhone (3G, 3Gs, 4) or current (fifth) generation iPod touch as their preferred digital shooter, there's a handy-dandy item to back up your images and contact list. It's the Iomega SuperHero Backup & Charger ($69.99 at Target and www.iomega.com). Download the free Iomega SuperHero app to the Apple. Whenever you dock the product in the spiffy Iomega base, your contacts and still photos (not videos) are automatically saved to a 4GB SD card while the device recharges.

Of course, these same (and more) backup burdens can be achieved by connecting to a computer. But Iomega's solution requires zero thought or effort.

KINDLE WITH BENEFITS: What's the difference between a conventional Kindle eReader tablet with Wi-Fi and the new Kindle with Special Offers? The latter costs $25 less (a mere $114) but is "ad-supported." Instead of delivering an opening screen image of a famous author, you might see a monochrome advertisement for a new car, bank card or skin cream.

Samsung NX11 review

Compact system camera is a minor refinement, but handles well

The 14.6 effective megapixel Samsung NX11 upgrades the original NX10 (read our review here), with some refining design tweaks and additional lens compatibility, a 20mm ‘pancake’ plus 20-50mm zoom, launched alongside it. But although it is a compact system camera (or CSC) like its predecessor it still takes its style cues from a conventional bridge camera or digital SLR, rather than a pocket compact.

The camera comes in two parts, the body and the lens. An image stabilised 18-55mm zoom came with our test kit, providing a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27.7 to 84.7mm. Since like all CSC’s the NX11’s body is mirrorless, it occupies about half the physical depth of even an entry level DSLR, such as the Canon EOS 600D.

Samsung NX11: Build

Even with lens removed the NX11 body would struggle to fit into a jacket pocket however, as could be achieved with a rival CSC without optic, such as an Olympus E-PL2 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2. The larger size is partly because, unlike them, the Samsung offers the advantage of a built-in viewfinder plus AMOLED (not LCD) screen directly beneath for framing up shots as well as reviewing them. Neither viewfinder nor monitor is angle adjustable however.

Scintillating shooting experience with the Samsung NX-11

The UrbanWire spoke to Mr. William Aung, lecturer at the School of Film and Media Studies in Ngee Ann Polytechnic and professional photographer, and he gave his input on Samsung’s NX-11 camera.
“The NX11 is a great alternative for people who wants to enjoy great image quality of DSLRs, but does not appreciate the weight and the size of the modern DSLRs. A lot of people mistake NX11 for a micro-four-third. In fact, the camera is a mirror-less body featuring an APS-C sensor, which in a way, is the same size and quality of most DSLR cameras in the market.

Review: Samsung SMX-F50 Standard Definition SD Camcorder

Camera Has an Eye for Photos, Brain for Wi-Fi

The pocket-size, point-and-shoot digital camera was once a standard part of many consumers' electronic tool kit. But it has been challenged by smartphones with better and better built-in cameras and photo apps. While they lack some photographic capabilities, like physical zoom lenses, phones are carried everywhere all the time. Plus, they are wirelessly connected to email and the Web, where digital pictures often wind up.

Walt Mossberg tries out a new pocket-size digital camera from Samsung with some of the wireless convenience of a smartphone. The Samsung SH100 has built-in Wi-Fi, which allows it to rapidly upload or email pictures and beam photos wirelessly to a PC.
Now, Samsung has introduced a pocket camera that aims to erode the advantages of smartphones—even though the company also produces phones. This new camera, the SH100, has Wi-Fi built in. This isn't the first camera with built-in Wi-Fi, but Samsung hopes to better capitalize on it. It also competes with the add-on memory card called Eye-Fi, that brings Wi-Fi abilities to almost any camera. It has easy, preconfigured uploading to Facebook, YouTube, Picasa, email and other online destinations, plus a bunch of added wireless features, including cordless transfer of photos to a PC.

Samsung EX1 review

Another of those fashionable SLD (single lens, direct view) cameras? Not quite. The EX1 still qualifies as a compact camera, lacking interchangeable lenses and sporting a small 1/1.7in CCD image sensor. Nonetheless its design and features borrow heavily from the new genre.
It's quite the thing these days to bring out a fixed-focal-length, wide-angle and highly compact "pancake" lens for your SLD. Samsung is following stylistic suit by kitting out the EX1 with a very compact lens giving a 24mm equivalent wide-angle setting. It's not interchangeable like an SLD's, but what it does offer is a very fast f/1.8 - f/2.4 maximum aperture to go with a 3x zoom range.
The rest of the body is relatively chunky though, in particular its 114mm width. And there's a big disadvantage compared to true SLD cameras such as the Olympus PEN range and Panasonic Lumix G2. You don't get the advantage of a big Four Thirds sensor here, with the standard compact camera size offering a total area almost six times smaller than a Micro Four Thirds sensor.

Samsung WB600 review

Samsung WB600
The battleground for the point and click shooter is getting hotter, especially where big zoom compacts are concerned. Now Samsung is jostling for position with Panasonic with its 15x optical zoom WB600 being offered with a host of added features and a robust but solid build at a bargain basement price.

Samsung ST95 review

Thinner than thou

Despite its slender body, the ST95 has a decent set of specs and comes with most of the latest mod cons. The 16.1-megapixel sensor allows it to capture still photos at resolutions of up to 4,608x3,456 pixels, which is pretty much the top figure for compact cameras at the moment. The 5x optical zoom lens has a focal length of 26-130mm (35mm film equivalent), which isn't exceptional but offers a reasonable balance of wide angle and zoom reach.
The video mode records clips in 720p high definition, at 30 frames per second. You'll find cameras capable of higher quality than this elsewhere but, again, it's perfectly acceptable given the ST95's size and price. It's worth noting, though, that the ST95's mono-only microphone means your movies will have poor-quality audio. Additionally, the camera doesn't have an HDMI-out socket, so there's no easy way to play back your videos on your HD Ready TV.

Hands on with the Samsung WB700 and NX11

It’s not always easy to get kids to flash a smile or pay attention to the camera, especially when you’re all huddled together flashing wacky faces or flaunting formal poses waiting for the flash to go off. The photographer begins the inevitable countdown: “3, 2, 1…”
And it is that exact moment that Junior decides he wants to pull your hair or scream for ice cream or look the other way as the picture gets snapped.

Samsung Blog Reveals Incredible Retro NX Prototypes

We first got wind that Samsung was planning a micro four-thirds competitor in 2009, when they unveiled the NX prototype at PMA, their first attempt at an interchangeable lens compact (ILC) camera. A new blog post from Samsung shows us just how radically different some of their prototypes were, and how much things changed between the various stages of design and the eventually released NX10.

Gadget review: Samsung NX100

If you’re looking for a compact, lightweight alternative to a DSLR, Samsung NX100 will be ideal for you.

Riding on the success of NX10, Samsung’s first mirrorless camera, NX100 also comes with a mirrorless APS-C size sensor and a three-inch AMOLED screen, plus new features such as i-Function Lens.

Mirrorless cameras were one of the digital camera trends in 2010, and they are expected to grow this year as more companies jump on the bandwagon.

What makes them special is that even though you can still play with interchangeable lenses, the same as you do with a DLSR, mirrorless cameras are much smaller and lighter.

There’s no need to explain the technicalities behind the reduction in size and weight, but do take note that mirrorless cameras don’t come with a viewfinder — this means the main source for viewing your photograph subjects is through the rear LCD or AMOLED screen.

Samsung HMX-H300 review

Small on price but big on picture quality
Samsung has been a solid performer in the camcorder market for some time now, but it wasn't until the launch of the Samsung H200 in 2010 that the Korean company showed it meant real business.
Despite a deceptively low £300 price-tag, the H200 managed to pack in Full HD shooting and an impressive 20x zoom.
At CES 2011 in January Samsung announced its successor – the Samsung H300 – and T3 has managed to be one of the first to get our hands on the camcorder.

The upgrade isn't massive, but there have been some significant improvements to the headline features. The biggest change is that the zoom ratio is a third larger than the H200. A 30x optical zoom is nothing to be sniffed at and this one works admirably.
Samsung H300: Controls
In the hand, the Samsung H300 is extremely light. It's small, too, at just 56x49x119mm. SD card camcorders can sometimes feel a touch plasticky, but the H300 is solid enough – mainly because the lens on the device is significant enough to make an impression.
There are one or twp quirks with the H300 that you have to get used to. For some reason, Samsung has kept the manual shutter for the lens which was last seen on the H200. Switch the camera on and the lens shutter won't open, you have to flick a switch on the side. You soon get used to it, but it can get a tad frustrating.
Samsung H300: Screen

The LCD is also not the crispest we have seen. At 230,000 pixels it's passable but we would have liked something a touch more high res. But, there is a significant improvement in the size – up from 2.7-inches on the H200 to 3-inches on the H300.
These minor niggles aside, the H300 is a fantastic camera to use. The in-built Optical Image Stabiliser worked well with our shaky hands, while the ability to shoot 1080/60i and 720/60p video meant that picture quality was always crisp and clear.
Samsung H300: Picture quality
The sensor on board is a 1/4-inch CMOS, which won't win awards for ingenuity but the technology surrounding it is genuinely impressive. Because it is 'backside illuminated' (BSI) our low-light shots had a lot more punch to them than normal.

In our tests, the camera lasted just under three hours which is a decent battery life and there were a number of manual options that you would expect on a camcorder in a higher price brackets – such as the ability to manually tweak shutter speed and white balance. The addition of a time lapse feature was also welcomed.
The Samsung HMX-300 is great-little camcorder. It's one for those who prefer their specs streamlined but don't want to scrimp on picture quality. And, for its price, it's an absolute bargain

How the NX Lenses are launched into the World. PART II : The NX Lens Planners

The NX series, which
was a major hit upon its release last year, has won high praise from users to
journalists of camera magazines. For the compact system camera, the lens is an
essential product. Aren't you curious about how the Samsung lens came to life?
What about the planning, designing, and marketing work that happened behind the
curtains to develop such a widely hailed product that promises an excellent
value for your money? Here is a sneak peek into how the Samsung NX lens
came to life and the behind stories.

Planning

1. Where
does lens planning start from? Do you follow market demand or do you focus on
technology?

Youngbae Kim
(Director, Product Planning Group)
: The NX lens
planning is driven by the market and consumers. We identify consumer needs and
define the lens specification based on their needs, and figure out how to match
the spec with the NX camera.

Jayong Koo
(Manager, Product Planning Group) :
Our planning is focused on the
consumers. We analyze various sales data, survey and interview the consumers to
build sophisticated understanding of their needs, and match that with our
technology to come up with a lens that the market is looking for.

Youngbae Kim (Director, Product Planning
Group)

2. What
channels do you use to gather consumer demands and
reactions?

Youngbae
Kim
: It's simple. We analyze market data, sales data, and conduct
consumer surveys to segment the customers by age group/type and decide the lens
specification for each.

3. What
made you develop the i-Function lens in the first place?

Youngbae
Kim
: I made a lot of effort trying to understand consumer needs and
their usage behavior, and it led me to the i-Function lens. I thought very hard
about how to make photo shooting easier and enjoyable. Lens until now had
increasingly better quality but that was about it. If existing lens were
reactive, following what the body ordered, I wanted to develop a lens that has
buttons on the lens that can give directions, and the outcome was the i-Function
lens.

Jayong
Koo
: An innovative idea on a lens that is the i-Function
lens
. If a former lens was part of the body that moves reactively at the
body's control, the i-Function lens, in contrast, controls the body, ensuring a
new innovative and convenient UI.

4. Where
did you focus in order to differentiate against competitors
products?

Youngbae
Kim
: We will continue to focus on performance and features, just like
the i-Function
lens
which has brought about a breakthrough in features.

Jayong Koo (Manager, Product Planning
Group)

5. What is
your outlook on mirrorless cameras and the future of the
i-Function?

Youngbae
Kim
: With such an entrenched DSLR market and mirrorless camera at only
its initial stage, many uncertainties exist. Nonetheless, I think that the
ability to fulfill the consumer's need to capture a beautiful scene is more
important than mirror versus mirrorless. It's true that the mirror camera was
able to better satisfy the consumers because it had better technology and
performance; however, I think that the transition from DSLR to mirrorless is a
natural path towards digitalization.

Jayong
Koo
: The compact system camera is an innovative camera that combines
the benefits of existing DSLR and point & shoot camera, and I think the
compact system camera market will grow. As a differentiated function of the NX,
the i-Function lens will be continuously upgraded and made more
convenient.

6. Do you
personally enjoy taking pictures?

Youngbae
Kim
: I recently had a late child and have taken a lot of pictures of
the baby.

Jayong
Koo
: I've been in the camera business for about 10 years and have
taken lots of pictures, which has been a great learning experience. These days,
I take pictures of my children using the NX100.

7. Can you
say a brief sentence about the lens you are currently developing that will be
revealed later?

Youngbae
Kim
: We plan to launch lenses for different purposes such as for macro
shooting, lens fit for video, and lens for portrait among many
others.

Marketing

1. Can you
describe what a product manager does?

Howoung Lee
(Senior Manager, Product Marketing Group)
: A product manager is
responsible for the whole process from its inception to mass production. Other
responsibilities include, when, where, and how much of the product will be
launched, how to compete with competitors, and what benefits to offer the
customers.

Howoung Lee (Senior Manager, Product Marketing
Group)

2. How is
marketing for cameras and lenses different from that of other electronic
products?

Howoung
Lee
: A camera is a product that has both digital and analog
attributes. The emotional aspect of the camera helps to connect people with
other people and deliver my own story.

3. What do
you highlights the most when trying to promote the excellence of the NX lens
compared to existing SLR cameras?

Howoung
Lee
: In marketing, there is a terminology called POP and POD. POP
stands for 'Point of Parity' and POD 'Point of Difference'. In terms of POP, we
made a high resolution lens to strengthen the attribute of the lens. In terms of
POD, we introduced the unprecedented i-Function to differentiate against
competitors.

4. Do you
personally like to take photos? If so, what is your favorite camera and
lens?

Howoung
Lee
: I was a sales man in the past and there was this one time when I
took a photo of a customer on a heavy snow day, which facilitated the
negotiation. became even fonder of photos then. I like light lenses that work
best with family photos.

5. Do you
have any words of advice for those aspiring to become a marketer or working in a
camera related business?

Howoung
Lee
: Because camera portrays the heart and philosophy of people, I
think you need to have a warm heart to do camera marketing.

Design

1. Can you
briefly talk about the lens design?

Kyunghan Noh
(Senior Designer, Design Group)
: A lens designer thinks about what
value and benefit the lens should offer to the consumers when it comes out.
These thoughts impact the shape and composition of the lens.

Kyunghan Noh (Senior Designer, Design
Group)

2. I would
think that the lens would be limited in outer design compared to the camera
body. What do you think? What is the most important about outer
design?

Kyunghan
Noh
: The lens is an ultra precision instrument with size issues, so
it's true that it has limitations in design. Defining a unique image group is
important.

3. I hear
that designers often have a hard time being stuck between the developers and
planners. What process do you go through to coordinate?

Kyunghan
Noh
: In the past, the designers had a little role to play, but the
mindset has shifted towards creativity, so now people come to ask for our
opinions.

4. Bluering
is a key feature of the Samsung NX lens. How did this come
about?

Kyunghan
Noh
: We borrowed blue, the color that represents Samsung, to express
Samsung's unique identity through the lens as well.

5. A
self-evaluation of the i-Function lens?

Kyunghan
Noh
: I think the i-Function
lens
redefined the paradigm of interchangeable lens. If the existing cameras
were not able to control the function looking at the object, the i-Function lens
is able to do so, which is a clear differentiator.

6. What
kind of lens do you want to make in the future?

Kyunghan
Noh
: Our plan is to strengthen the premium lens line-up. We will also
continue to develop upgraded versions of previously launched lenses. I also want
to make a lens than can control the whole body from it.

7. Do you
have any words for those who want to become a lens
designer?

Kyunghan
Noh
: A lens designer should first have ample experience in taking
pictures. If you take a lot of pictures, you start to see improvement areas as a
user, so for those who want to become a camera or lens designer, I recommend you
take a lot of pictures.

In the two series,
we met with the lens developers, the NX lens
planners, marketers and designers to talk about the key features of the NX lens
and how the i-Function came about. We were able to see that the NX lens
was created to meet the needs of the users in a convenient way, which was made
possible through unsparing effort of experts in their respective fields. I look
forward to how the NX lens
evolves and develops in the future!

The NX series, which
was a major hit upon its release last year, has won high praise from users to
journalists of camera magazines. For the compact system camera, the lens is an
essential product. Aren't you curious about how the Samsung lens came to life?

the benefits of existing DSLR and point & shoot camera, and I think the
compact system camera market will grow.

Samsung NX11 review(2)

Can the Samsung NX11 reinvent the hybrid camera category or is it much the same as the previous NX10 model but repackaged? We first got our hands on the Samsung NX11 back in January, where an extensive play with the latest hybrid or compact system camera showed us little advances over the previous NX10 model rather than a giant leap forward...

NX100`s Microsite from Chile has Won the Webby Awards!

The 2View and NX100’s microsite of Samsung Electronics Chile, Vive La Experiencia, has recently won the 15th Webby Awards as “RICH MEDIA: PROMOTIONAL”.
Of the nearly 10,000 entries from about 60 countries submitted to the 15th Annual Webby Awards, fewer than 10% were distinguished as an Official Honoree. This is 5th time Samsung has won the Webby Awards and the 1st time for Chile companies.
The microsite offers information on Samsung’s 2View camera, the ST600’s unique functions, such as Self-Portrait, Jump Shot, Children Mode, Couple Shot, and Timer. It also offers the feature of the i-Function lens and NX100’s campaign film with OK Go.
The main event, Vive La Experiencia (“live the experience” in Spanish), is a fun flash you can enjoy whether you speak Spanish or not.

San Maul – My Favorite Korean Restaurant

Samsung Electronics Co.,Ltd. has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.
This is my favorite Korean restaurant, and it encapsulates what I think are Korean food’s strengths. San Maul, or “Mountain Village,” is a peasant farmhouse style restaurant at the foot of Gwanak Mountain that was originally set up to cater to weekend hikers. It’s since grown into a mini empire with restaurant specializing in all kinds of foods up and down the road leading to the mountain.
Even though the restaurant has gotten a bit of fame, the quality is still the same. They serve rustic Korean foods and don’t feel the need to slather everything with gochujang as a crutch. Their homemade hooch, minsokju, is the perfect accompaniment and is great in hot or cold weather.
The restaurant itself is a bit of a complex, with paths winding inside and outside stout thatched roofed wooden buildings. It’s cozy in the winter and a great place to dine outside in the summer, watching the sun set behind the mountain. One night, my wife and I just laid down after eating and watched the stars. How many restaurants let you do that?
Our favorites at San Maul are the chicken barbecue, haemul pajeon, dotorimok salad and their signature boribap. The chicken barbecue is smoked and mahogany colored. I swear it tastes like bacon, and it’s the favorite of many foreigners I bring to the restaurant. The haemul pajeon is a seafood and scallion pancake that is thick and crispy that you dip into soy sauce. The dotorimok salad is made with acorn jelly, lettuce, carrots, onions and a dressing that mixes gochujang, garlic, vinegar and wild sesame seeds. It’s one of my favorites on hot summer days. Their boribap is barley and rice with a series of country herbs, individually prepared, that you mix in your bowl with doenjang, sesame oil and gochujang. It’s one of the few vegetarian dishes that I crave and can satisfy me for a meal. I should also mention that the doenjang is supposedly three years old. Its smell is like a well ripened cheese and rounds out the entire experience.
I hope you enjoy this little tribute to my favorite little restaurant.

A walk in the park with a flying camera

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has provided the author of this article with the mentioned digital imaging device.
Well today my mother and me went on a walk in the wildlife park near my house. The sky was a great clear Colorado day with a light breeze. The park itself is in between some farms in the area and there we were able to see some cows and horse up close. It was real fun and while I was there I ended up trying to make little animation with NX11.
I did this by taking a whole bunch of photos as I walked and strung them together on my computer. The videos are playing at 6 frames per second if your interested. The first one came out ok, but I think I started to figure it out as I went along. One of them turned out so bad though I’m to embarrass to show you, but I have 4 others that are pretty neat.
Here take a look!
This was my first try. I think it came out ok, but a bit boring to watch.
This is my second attempt at sequencing pictures together. My third attempt didn’t come out well at all, so I’ll skip it and go to my 4th attempt.
This is a flip.
I thought this one came out really well. It is my last attempt at making a sequence animation while I was walking on this trip. But, after doing this I’m really interested in trying again and I hope you enjoyed watching them.

Samsung NX11 review(1)

Compact system camera is a minor refinement, but handles well
The 14.6 effective megapixel Samsung NX11 upgrades the original NX10 (read our review here), with some refining design tweaks and additional lens compatibility, a 20mm ‘pancake’ plus 20-50mm zoom, launched alongside it. But although it is a compact system camera (or CSC) like its predecessor it still takes its style cues from a conventional bridge camera or digital SLR, rather than a pocket compact.

Great opportunity to experience the NX11

Samsung received enthusiastic feedbacks from those who experienced this workshop. They left warm thank-you notes. Below are some of the notes that were left:

Michael Kirchner : Once more I would like to say thank you for the felicitous NX11 workshop. I’m curious to test the NX11 during the next weeks.

Oliver Schäf : Thank you for the great opportunity! Generally speaking, I’m positively surprised by the NX11.

Through this street art tour in Berlin, Samsung could get a good opportunity to place Samsung’s key messages and to introduce Samsung as one of the leading digital camera companies to social media. Moreover, it was a great time to meet the key online influencers and to establish good relationships with them.
