Haptic digital camera! What about its functions? Let’s find out every function of it. If you’re interested in ST10, please focus.

Shooting mode screen

If you turns power on or opens the lens cap, the camera turns on. Most of the functions are operated by touch. Even the shooting mode is set by touch. Honestly, dial type is more convenient than touch for this, but this is Haptic. Then, let’s see what kind of shooting modes it supports.

Various shooting mode

There’re six shooting modes. Since each mode offers different functions, so you’d better make use it according to your purpose. Then let’s see their features. Some might think what about that extra icon? But the icon on the far left side is another fun factor of Haptic digital camera, multimedia function.

Multimedia mode in ST10

Multimedia function includes MP3, PMP, and text viewer. I’ll cover this later. And now I’ll focus on camera functions first.

Auto mode

This is a convenient auto shooting mode, most frequently used one. Let’s see what kind of functions it supports.

Auto mode- Flash

This is a menu for setting flash. Personally, I don’t like using flash, so I always keep it off. But it doesn’t remember the last-time setting, so I have to set it for every time. This needs to be solved.

Auto mode- Focus

Regular mode is suitable for shooting in 80cm or further, and Auto macro is good for every shooting. For your convenience, you may set the mode to Auto macro. But this too, resets to AF when you turn on power, so you have to set it again.

Auto macro shot sample image (resized, not edited)

I didn’t do no editing, but looks pretty good.

Auto mode - Timer

If offers various timer functions, so you can choose the right one depending on your situation. For the reference, double is a function that takes the first shot 10 seconds after you press shutter and then second shot 2 seconds later. And Motion timer automatically takes a shot when there’s no movement detected 6 seconds after pressing shutter. It will be useful when you take self-shots with tripod.

Auto mode – Screen information setting

You can decide on whether every information about the shooting will be displayed on the screen or not.

Auto mode – Function menu

In Auto mode, there’re 6 functions menus. Normally, it’s hidden, and when you press FN key, it appears on the screen, showing the menu.

Auto mode – AF domain

It is to decide on auto focus control. Other than regular functions, it is equipped with Smart touch AF which chases and focuses on the subject touched on the screen.

Auto mode – Face detection

Various Face detection mode comes in handy when you take portrait shots. Especially, it has unique Smart Face function which focuses on the registered faces. It is becoming something like AI.

Auto mode – Image size

9m : 3456 x 2592
8m : 3456 x 2304
7m : 3456 x 1944
5m : 2592 x 1944
3m : 2048 x 1536
1m : 1024 x 768

There’re 6b options for image size. Depending on the capacity, you can choose one.

Auto mode – Image quality

I’ve mentioned this before, but I don’t understand why there’re many options for image quality. Doesn’t everyone only want the best quality? Of course, the weakness of best quality images is it takes up much space, but these days the memory capacity is quite high.

Auto mode – Photo style

There’re 9 photo styles, so you can take pictures in many different concepts. However, it is not actually frequently used.

Sample photos for each photo style (resized, not edited)

These are pictures taken in 8 styles. Compare them!

Auto mode -Voice

You may leave voice memo or record sound. When you take a picture, if you cannot write a memo, it’s a good idea to leave a voice memo. If you can make a good use of it, it’s a great function. So far, we’ve reviewed the auto mode. From now on, we’ll look into Program mode for the detailed settings. Since I excluded the same menu as Auto mode, so please refer to that part if needed.

Program mode

The left menu of Program mode is the same is Auto menu. But if you go inside, it’s a bit different, so please check.

Program mode- Flash

Compared to Auto mode, there’re more options. In Program mode, compulsory flash, slow syncro are added. Are you not familiar with slow syncro? Slow syncro is a function that brightens the subject and background at the same time.

Program mode- Focus

Compared to Auto mode, Program mode omits Auto macro and adds macro and super macro. FYI, macro is suitable for shooting within 80cm focal length, and super macro works well within 5cm shots. Amazing, right? It supports many settings for high-quality images.

Program mode- Function menu

In Program mode, you can control things in detail through divers menu. There’re total 13 menus in three pages.

Program mode- Exposure control

It is a function that controls brightness of photo by setting exposure value.

Program mode- White balance

It is a function that controls color depending on light sources. For the reference, let me tell you the appropriate environment for each menu.

Sunlight- outdoor shots on sunny day

Cloudy – on cloudy day

Fluorescent –H – under orange color fluorescent light

Fluorescent –L – under white color fluorescent light

Incandescent – under halogen lamp or incandescent light

These are well explained in menu description, so it will be easy to use for beginners.

Program mode- ISO

It is to decide on ISO, available up to ISO3200. Great. But you know that noise can appear over ISO 800, right? But if you use it correctly, it can generate satisfying images in dark environment.

Program mode- ACB

It is a function that naturally edits bright/dark difference. Normally, it is done after taking photos. But how wonderful the digital camera does if for you!

Program mode- Sidelight

With this function, you can set domain for measuring brightness. I we look at the function,

Multi-split – measuring the average brightness of whole screen

Spot – measuring brightness of focus mark domain

Central – measuring brightness of central area

You can get diverse photos according to brightness, so make good use of it.

Program mode- Shooting type

It is to decide on shooting types. There’re regular shots, successive shots, motion capture, and AEB function. Motion capture takes 6 shots per sec in high speed, and AEB takes 3 successive shots with exposure change.

Program mode- Image editing

Image editing such as sharpness, contrast, and saturation control, which used to be done with editing program, is now done within a camera. How awesome! We’ve looked into the Program mode, and now let’s take a look at the Scene mode which is useful for beginners.

Scene mode

This mode is to choose right scenes for each shooting environment. If we look at the menu offered,

Beauty shot – a mode that clarifies skin tone

Frame guide– a mode that sets shooting angle in advance

Night scene- a mode for night scene shot

Portrait- a mode for portrait shot

Children- a mode for taking a picture of children

Landscape- a mode for landscape shot

Close-up- a mode for close-up shot

Text- a mode for taking text or document shot

Sunset- a mode for shooting around sunset

Dawn- a mode for shooting around dawn

Backlight- a mode for shooting in backlight

Fireworks- a mode taking a picture of fireworks

Beach and Snow- a mode for shooting at beach or in snow

It’s offering various modes. The most useful mode is probably Beauty shot. That blur feeling is fantastic. It used to a separate menu, but now it’s inside Scene mode. Anyways, these various modes can be very useful to beginners.

Beauty shot is applied to this image. Looks brightened, doesn’t it? I wanted to show the original image, but my wife might kill me. :) I just want to show you how well it works

Image Stabilization mode

It is a mode to minimize the camera shakes. It will be definitely required for those who have tremulous hands. But I could take good pictures without the Image Stabilization function, maybe because of ST10’s good sensitivity. That’s why I like it.

Video shooting mode

It is for recording videos. When it’s ready, it shows STANDBY.

Video shooting mode – Function menu

It also offers various setting just like photo functions.

Video shooting mode

There’re three types for video size. It’s a little disappointing it doesn’t support HD, today’s trend. And it supports up to 20 frames in size 800.

Types of video size

800 : 800 x 592
640 : 640 x 480
320 : 320 x 240

It supports only up to SD quality video.

Video shooting mode – Image Stabilization

It also supports Image Stabilization function in video shooting, so it helps take stable shots.

Smart Auto mode

This is my favorite mode in ST10. It automatically detects scenes and takes a shot. There was also a scene mode before, but it was not used that much since you had to change the mode every time. But Smart Auto mode automatically changes the mode for each scene, so the inconvenience has been solved. It could be the perfectly great function for beginners. It is the completed version of the scene mode.

Smart Auto mode – Smart Flash

This is a function that automatically sets flash for each scene. It’s like a robot! We’ve looked at the whole functions, and now please enjoy the photos taken with ST10. I only resized the images, and didn’t edit them at all.

They look pretty good, huh? If you edit them, it will look even more satisfying.

So far, we’ve looked at the functions in ST10. Even though it is a slim digital camera, there’re dull of great function. It has more satisfying features than expected as a slim digital camera. Especially, the best Smart Auto function!! From the next review, we’ll find out the real charms of ST10, so please wait for it.
