+ Haptic digital camera ST10 review

The biggest weakness that was pointed out in touch screen interface was its touch sensitivity. In order to solve this problem, ‘Haptic’ technology, which used to applied to cell phones and MP3 player, is now applied to a digital camera. ST10 is the first digital camera that has applied Haptic function. Let’s take a close look at this compact digital camera ST10, which has not only Haptic function but MP3 player and PMP functions.

Appearance and design

This is the front side. What is most noticeable is round cap. There is a flash next to it, and a little mike hole on the left. Above the lens cap, you can see a black circle. That is where AF assist light comes out to adjust focus.

If you turn the lens cap to the arrow-pointed direction, the lens comes out. At first, it was troublesome to turn on power, turn the lens cap, turn off power, and turn the lens cap again. But later I found out that if I turn the lens cap, it turns on, and when I turn the cap again, it turns off. And it became a lot more convenient.

Its lens is inner zoom lens, supporting 3x optical zoom. Also, it has 9,000,000 pixels, a bit less than 12,000,000 pixels of recent digital cameras. But in compact digital cameras, it seems not to make much difference.

On the back, you can see 3 inch touch screen. HVGA (320x240) LCD screen is wide, but it shows the image somewhat stronger than how it looks on the PC monitor. So the result looks better on camera than on PC. You’d better take a few tests so you can realize the actual difference between the two.

At the top, you can see shutter, power button, and speaker from the right.

At the top, you can see shutter, power button, and speaker from the right.

At the bottom, there’s a hole for tripod and battery/memory card holder.

It uses SD card for memory and supports SDHC.

Packaging

It is in a commonly seen paper box

There’re body and accessories such as installation CD/manual, earphone, charger, AV cable, charging/sync cable, etc.

Charger is USB port type, so not only ST10, you can charge other USB charging type machines like MP3 player, too.

This is a USB cable for charging/sync.

his is a AV cable to connect to TV and stuff.

Earphone is not a regular 3.5 pie round one but the one that is used for cell phones and stuff. So you cannot use other earphones. I wish it included a short gender.

There is a stylus for touch screen. You can easily connect it to strap, and it has very unique design.

Shooting mode and functions

This is a menu for mode selection. From the nine-o’clock direction, there’re Multimedia (PMP, MP3 mode), Smart Auto mode, Auto mode, Program mode, Scene mode, Dual Image Stabilization mode, and Video recording mode. No extra explanation would be needed for Multimedia, Auto, Program, and Video recording mode. And Samsung camera users probably know about Dual Image Stabilization mode. It is a combination of optical and digital image stabilization for stable images.

In Scene mode, you can select modes like ‘Landscape,’ ‘Portrait,’ ‘Night Scene,’ etc. The most noticeable mode here is Beauty shot mode.

Beauty shot is a mode for beautiful portrait shots by applying ‘blur’ effect to photos in camera itself. Can you see the difference between the left image without Beauty shot function and the right one with Beauty shot on?

Other than Beauty shot function, ST10 also offers various functions for portrait shots including frequently used Face detection focus function, Smile shutter that shoots smiley faces, Blink detection that automatically takes one more shot when it detects blinking of eyes, and Self guide function for self-shots that notifies you by beeping sound when your face locates right on the screen. I think it is a camera with best functions for portrait shots.

‘Smart Auto’ is a function that sets scene mode by itself. In Smart Auto mode, if you take portrait shots, the mode changes to portrait mode. If the subject becomes closer, it automatically changes to close-up mode. And if you take a photo of landscape, it becomes landscape mode. In my experience, its detection rate was 95% accurate or higher.

Multimedia functions

ST10 offers music, video, and text viewer functions. It supports 320KBps MP3 files for music and only the files converted by Samsung Media Converter for videos.

In order to use music, video, and text viewer function, you should make MP3, PMP, or TEXT folder on memory route folder like above and put in a file there.

It supports voice memo function, so you can leave brief voice memo. And you may record voice memo for taken photos for 10 seconds each.

General review and summary

ST10 has compact size and gorgeous design; plus, multimedia functions such and MP3 and PMP. So you can leave your MP3 home when you go out with this camera. In addition, it has various features like ‘Beauty shot,’ ‘Blink detection,’ ‘Smile shot,’ ‘Face detection focus,’ and ‘Self guide,’ enabling good portrait shots under any circumstance. It seems that it is best suited for teens or women in their twenties. I’ll keep posting its various result or application later. Thank you.
